The Reverend Stephen Kern
Rector
skern@stphilipsunionville.ca

My favorite uncle, Uncle Christian, was a significant role model for me. He was a man of many talents, creative intellect, and a hard worker. He inspired me to be interested in a wide range of pursuits, and to revel in the richness of life's offerings.

The spiritual journey of life has brought me various opportunities, such as seminary professor, school teacher, waiter, wheat harvester, spiritual director and canoe guide. Educational and employment pursuits have given the opportunity to live in New York, Saskatoon, Williamsburg Virginia, Igloolik Nunavut, Colorado, the Ottawa Valley and our current home in Aurora.

When not involved in ministry, I enjoy cooking with Anne, exercising, road-biking and motorcycling. My life-friend and partner is Dr. Anne Kern, to whom I have been happily married for 27 years. We have four wonderful children for whom we are grateful. I have committed my life, with joy, to the service of Jesus Christ, in the Anglican Church of Canada.

In May 2011, I joined  ministry at St. Philip’s from Trinity Church in Aurora where I was Associate Priest.  Stephen was formerly a part-time professor at Tyndale Seminary in spiritual formation.  Stephen was ordained a priest at Trinity in November 2008 and holds both a Master of Theology and Master of Divinity degrees.

The Reverend Deacon Lorraine Runza
Permanent Deacon
lrunza@powergate.ca

The "offices of the church" are Bishops, Priests and Deacons. Deacons are directly responsible to their bishop.

Deacons are the bridge between the community and the church; and the church to the community.

As such, a deacon is not employed (paid) by the church but has a full or part time paid position in the world outside the church. My "paid" job is to recruit and train pastoral visitors for Bishop George Elliott.

My role at St Philip's is to work along with the incumbent to care for the sick and shut-ins; to work as an advocate and visitor to the elderly in the parish; to assist families in preparation for baptism and confirmation, and take on other roles as the clergy team decides. I assist with the services at Unionvilla, the local nursing home.

My role in the liturgy as a deacon is to read the Gospel, set the table and dismiss the gathered. I preach from time to time as requested.
