St. Philip’s is one of the oldest parishes in the Diocese of Toronto. We were founded in 1839 when the first church was built on part of our cemetery. With the advent of the railroad in the late 19th century, the village grew toward the south and in 1913 the building was moved to Main Street, enlarged and faced with brick. It still stands beside the Fred Varley Art Gallery, where it serves as a Church of the Nazarene. The parish grew with the population and on Sunday, December 13, 1986, the congregation carried the torch in procession up Kennedy Road to our present comfortable building which became known as St. Philip’s on-the-hill.
Today our history is being written by a new generation with gratitude for the faith of our forebears and vision for the living church of tomorrow.
